Mindful Training
If we train ourselves to reach for a snack or pick up the phone to text-message whenever we feel frightened or bored, this is definitely training. The next time we feel uncomfortable we will also tend to reach for some comfort outside ourselves, eventually establishing a deeply ingrained habit, another brick in the wall of our mental prison. – Gaylon Ferguson, “Fruitless Labor “ |

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.

Embarking on an Optimistic Path
Buddhism is a path of supreme optimism, for one of its basic tenets is that no human life or experience is to be wasted or forgotten, but all should be transformed into a source of wisdom and compassionate living. – Taitetsu Unno, “Number One Fool” |

Emotions
For example, I may not know under what heading to put the emotion of worry. Under the old definition, worry might be considered good. Let us use our yardstick to see if worry goes under love. Do I tense or do I remain relaxed when I worry? I get tense. Worry comes under the heading of hate. Is it good or bad to feel sorry for a sick person? When I feel sorry for a person do I feel tense or do I stay relaxed? I stay relaxed, therefore sorrow comes under the heading of love. – Father Eli, The Second Book of Widsom |

How to be Mindful
Since the sense of self is the embodiment of the absence of awareness, forgetting to observe is inevitable as we try harder to be aware. The problem of how to be mindful is actually resolved not through strenuous effort but by relaxing, allowing, and observing what is already here. Within the framework of relaxation, the sense of self has a diminishing power center, making space for awareness to be revealed. – Rodney Smith, “From Thought to Stillness” |

We are now faced with the fact, my friends, that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history, there is such a thing as being too late.” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. |

Look Deeply at Your Life
To practice the dharma is to look into the content of one’s life in a very deep way. To do this, one must be able to discern between one’s strengths and one’s shortcomings. – Ogyen Trinley Dorje, the 17th Karmapa, “Intelligence & Investigation “ |
