Mini Mindfulness Break for October 14, 2021

Dear *[FNAME]*:
In taking refuge in the Buddha, we take refuge in the possibility that we, like the Buddha, can be freed from greed, liberated from hatred, and awakened from delusion — this is one of the ways enlightenment is described. We do not take refuge in a deity or power higher than ourselves. We find faith and confidence in the idea that enlightenment is possible because the human being Siddhartha Gautama — as the Buddha was called before his enlightenment — was able to exemplify that potential for humanity in his awakening. We take refuge in a potential that is deeply human.

Dear *[FNAME]*:
“When you wake up, you realize that you wake up out of everything, including all the things that have helped to bring you there.

“The biggest barrier to awakening is the belief that it is something rare. When this barrier is dropped, or at least you start to tell yourself, ‘I really don’t know if my belief that awakening is difficult is true or not,’ then everything becomes instantly available to you. What is so beautiful about awakening is that when you are no longer functioning through your conditioning, then the sense of ‘me’ who was living that life is no longer there.”

– Akayashanti, Interview with Maryanne Comaroto

Dear *[FNAME]*:
The Power of Perspective

Only a being’s perspective leads to suffering. Two people in the exact same situation, according to their outlook and expectations, can have completely different experiences. Turn that around, and any conditions can be a vehicle for bondage–or freedom and awakening.

– Vinny Ferraro, “The Heartful Dodger”

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Cultivate an Awakened Mind

Bodhicitta, generally translated as the wish for or spirit of awakening, refers to a state of mind that corresponds to being awakened or that leads to it. It is the intention to attain perfect awakening for the sake of all beings.

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Vision and Routine

The key to development along the Buddhist path is repetitive routine guided by inspirational vision. It is the insight into final freedom–the peace and purity of a liberated mind–that uplifts us and impels us to overcome our limits. But it is by repetition–the methodical cultivation of wholesome practices–that we cover the distance separating us from the goal and draw ever closer to awakening.

– Bhikkhu Bodhi, “Vision and Routine”

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Every born Wayfinder goes through stages of self-realization: loneliness, striving, disappointment, surrender, release, and then the slow awakening to a world where magic is real and miracles commonplace. The journey is worth it.

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Great Questioning, Great Awakening

The most important part of the practice is for the question to remain alive and for your whole body and mind to become a question. In Zen they say that you have to ask with the pores of your skin and the marrow of your bones. A Zen saying points out: Great questioning, great awakening; little questioning, little awakening; no questioning, no awakening.

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Our Shared Awakening

Nothing is separate and alone. This is how things are. This is compassion, not merely an extra something one of us feels for another, but existence itself. Being is by its nature sharing and loving. And we realize this not as a concept or a method we can work at and finally grasp, but as a truth that we perceive through our mutual recognition, our mutual shared awakening.

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Teach by Example

It is not by preaching or expounding the sutras (scriptures) that you fulfill the task of awakening others to self-realization; it is rather by the way you walk, the way you stand, the way you sit and the way you see things.
