Mini Mindfulness Break for April 07, 2023

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Dr. King said, “I’ve decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.” It was the sticking to love that has inspired me and supported me over my own journey–his willingness to live in the integrity of that for which he stood. His steadfastness and forthrightness mirrors what I’ve been taught in the Dharma and what I try to put forth in my practice. “Taking the seat with dignity” is often thought of as standing against hate and injustice, but it’s important to note that Dr. King actually took a stand for love, for equality, for equity, for compassion, for empathy, for non-harming.

Revolutionary Practice

True dharma practice is a revolutionary activity, and you can’t do it in a comfortable way. You really have to challenge the whole identity of your life.

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Putting Your Body to Good Use

What should you do to put your body to good use? Most people have no idea. A craftsman who borrows some tools will try to make the best possible use of them while they are available. Your body, too, is actually on loan to you for the time being, for the brief period left before it is taken back from you by death. Had you better not use it to practice the dharma while you can?

– Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, “The Day After You Die”

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Acknowledging that the only real working basis is oneself and that there is no way around that, one takes refuge in the Buddha as an example, in the dharma as the path, and in the sangha as companionship.

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Buddha’s answer in the Discourse on Happiness, when he was asked:

“Many gods and men are eager to know what are the greatest blessings which bring about a peaceful and happy life. Please, Tathagata, will you teach us?”

And the Buddha replied with 13 blessings, one of which was:

“To persevere and be open to change, and to have regular contact with monks and nuns, and to fully participate in Dharma discussions – this is the greatest happiness.”

– Buddha

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Inexhaustible Dharma

Some people think by giving everything away, you end up with nothing. But the Dharma is an inexhaustible well. However much you give of it, you can always go back for more, because in this well the more you take from it, the higher the water will rise.

Dear *[FNAME]*:
What the Buddha Never Said

When the Buddha speaks, it is said, he always intends his words to lead to the welfare and happiness of the hearers. But his words are not always tied to the theme of “suffering and its cessation.” To insist on confining them to this topic is to drastically narrow the range of the dharma.

– Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi, “‘I Teach Only Suffering and the End of Suffering'”

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Look Deeply at Your Life

To practice the dharma is to look into the content of one’s life in a very deep way. To do this, one must be able to discern between one’s strengths and one’s shortcomings.

Don’t Miss a Moment

In dharma practice, we both prepare for the long haul and remain open to immediate insight and change… The perspectives of both gradual and sudden transformation may remind us that, as the Buddha taught, every moment of mindfulness matters!

“Just as a small child
Gradually develops its body and strength,
Dharma is in that same way,
