Suzanne’s Birthday
To compensate for cutting her finger, Gail Teehan agreed to meet me for lunch today at Kitty’s Place. At least, this gave me the opportunity to tell her what was going on with me and to find out what her trip to Santa Barbara was like. After lunch, we took a nice walk in Fort Bak …

A Nothing Day!
I was supposed to have a Feldenkrais session and a massage from Gail Teehan today, but she cut her finger and was unable to work. As a result, I did nothing but fight with my wife and work today! See, I’m really quite normal! Gail and I are scheduled to have lunch tomorrow at Kit …

Dear Friends:
“Crush the eggshell of the mind
and unfold your wings in the
open sky; Destroy the hut of duality
and inhabit the expansive
mansion of awareness;
Ignorance–dualistic thinking–
is the great demon obstructing
your path.
Slay it right now and be free.”

Who Am I?
I had a session with Leslie Davenport today. I went in with an agenda, which I promptly forgot. However, after rambling on about all the good things that were happening in my life, I finally remembered that I wanted to do a guided imagery in which all of the dead cells and unwant …

Dear Friends:
Cutting Through Anger

Mental noting takes us in a very different direction from getting lost in a story: “Oh, this anger is so miserable; I am such a terrible person because I’m always angry; this is just how I will always be,” and so on. Instead, we simply say to ourselves, “anger, anger”–and cut through all of that elaboration, the story, the judgment, the interpretation.

This was the first day I felt almost normal! Lucky for that, too, because I had to go to Menlo Park to complete my performance evaluation with my boss. The day in Menlo Park was quite wonderful. The results of my review were acceptable except for one slight disagreement, which we …

Dear Friends:
Taking refuge in Sangha enables the deep faith and tremendous courage it takes to meet our lives honestly, with eyes and heart wide open. In Buddhist practice, the encouragement of Sangha is essential in order to live a life of awakening. We do not and can not awaken alone.

This morning, I received a call from an old friend, Rabbi Zalman Schachter, who is now on the faculty at the Narpoa Institute. He called me because of an email that he received from Sylvia Boorstein. Zalman was quick to wish me well in my recovery, and his demeanor was full of lo …

Dear Friends:
Living Beyond Words

Zen practice is always about returning to that place where there are no words. Early on, I realized that to use words, you have to live life beyond words, before words, without words. Only then do you have the right to speak.

Mini Mindfulness Break for May 25, 2022

Dear Friends:
Get in touch with yourself

“In modern society most of us don’t want to be in touch with ourselves; we want to be in touch with other things like religion, sports, politics, a book – we want to forget ourselves. Anytime we have leisure, we want to invite something else to enter us, opening ourselves to the television and telling the television to come and colonize us.”

The five levels of compassion1 came from Dr. Gabor Maté. I believe these developed out of his work for 20+ years as a pediatrician and 12+ years of working with addicts in the east side of downtown Vancouver, BC. As a child, Gabor was handed off to strangers in Hungary where he …
