Mini Mindfulness Break for June 13, 2021

Dear *[FNAME]*:
A Place for Desire

The ultimate aim of my own Buddhist practice is an indestructibly confident and happy state of life through which I can help suffering people. Finding a balanced place for desire in that pursuit helps keep me motivated to do the hard, personal work demanded of a Buddhist practitioner.

Dear *[FNAME]*:
The Self-Destructiveness of Anger

When you give in to aversion and anger, it’s as though, having decided to kill someone by throwing him into a river, you wrap your arms around his neck, jump into the water with him, and you both drown. In destroying your enemy, you destroy yourself as well.

– Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche, “Putting Down the Arrow”

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Real Intimacy

There is no such thing as two people–whether baby and mother, two lovers, or teacher and student–being perfectly in sync with each other’s needs and wishes. Real intimacy arises from an ongoing process of connection that at some point is disrupted and then, ideally, repaired.

– Pilar Jennings, “Looking into the Eyes of a Master”

Dear *[FNAME]*:
I am willing to change.

My spiritual growth often comes to me in strange ways. It can be a chance meeting or an accident, a dis-ease or the loss of a loved one. Something inside urges me to follow, or I am forcefully prevented from living in the same old way. It is a little different for each person. I grow spiritually when I accept responsibility for my life. This gives me the inner power to make the changes in myself that I need to make. Spiritual growth is not about changing others. Spiritual growth happens to the person who is ready to step out of the victim role, into forgiveness, and into a new life. None of this happens overnight. It is an unfolding process. Loving myself opens the door, and being willing to change really helps.

– Louise Hay

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Sensual pleasures are alluring, and all things being equal, we don’t want to live such an austere life that we deny ourselves simple pleasures. But we all know there are dangers here, and our best defense is knowing what to cultivate and what not to cultivate. Look into this matter directly, and see for yourself what states of mind are healthy and unhealthy for you. Then undertake a commitment to cultivate your own health.

– Andrew Olendzki, Dharma Wheel – Tricycle

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Our Dangerous Romance with Anger

As a culture we swing from being afraid of anger to romanticizing it. I try to see anger for what it is, in myself, and neither fear it nor idealize it.

Plant Seeds with Care

If we act constructively, happiness will ensue; if we act destructively, problems will result…We create the causes by our actions, and we experience their results.

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Where we start is with our own life, our own existence, in its very basic sense: the fact that we draw breath, we exhale breath; we’re thrown into this world at birth and at death, we’ll be thrown out again… That’s the primary koan. And it’s always important… in one’s practice, to keep coming back to that. If your practice, your Buddhist philosophy, does not really address that core question, I think one has to really reconsider what you’re doing.

– Stephen Batchelor

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Don’t Miss a Moment

In dharma practice, we both prepare for the long haul and remain open to immediate insight and change… The perspectives of both gradual and sudden transformation may remind us that, as the Buddha taught, every moment of mindfulness matters!
