All things appear and disappear because of the concurrence of causes and conditions. Nothing ever exists entirely alone; everything is in relationship to everything else.

Samvega
I will tell of how I experienced samvega. Seeing people floundering like fish in small puddles, competing with one another–as I saw this, fear came into me. The world was entirely without substance. All the directions were knocked out of line. Wanting a haven for myself, I saw nothing that wasn’t laid claim to. Seeing nothing in the end but competition, I felt discontent. – The Buddha, “The Dismay of Motherhood” |

The Way
When the way ahead is open and clear and one has the goodwill, light-heartedness, and courage to tread it, the past and the future melt into nothingness, life is lived from the center of one’s being, and the self becomes as meaningful as the blue sky, the green fields, the flowing rivers, the littered streets, the hustling crowds, the filth and the beauty. – Diana St. Roth, “The Way” |

The Pursuit of Happiness
It’s our nature to want happiness and not want suffering. Thus, Buddhists do not ask that one give up the pursuit of happiness, but merely suggest that one become more intelligent about how happiness is pursued. – Jeffrey Hopkins, “Equality” |

Remembering Martin Luther King, Jr.
If the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha are about anything, they are about a profound understanding of identity and the broadest possible meaning of liberty–teachings that sooner or later had to appeal to a people for whom suffering and loss were their daily bread. – Charles Johnson, “A Sangha by Another Name” |

Joining in a Common Effort
We can be true to our own basic insight of what we see as true, but we can embrace other people, knowing that they also may have their truth too, and we try to find where we can join together in common effort. – Alfred Bloom, “Beyond Religion “ |
