Mini Mindfulness Break for April 07, 2023

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Dr. King said, “I’ve decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.” It was the sticking to love that has inspired me and supported me over my own journey–his willingness to live in the integrity of that for which he stood. His steadfastness and forthrightness mirrors what I’ve been taught in the Dharma and what I try to put forth in my practice. “Taking the seat with dignity” is often thought of as standing against hate and injustice, but it’s important to note that Dr. King actually took a stand for love, for equality, for equity, for compassion, for empathy, for non-harming.

Dear *[FNAME]*:
It Passes Away

What is the purpose of reacting to something when it is changing so quickly? What is the purpose of reacting with craving or clinging? It passes away. Or hatred: it passes away.

If we could read the secret history of our enemies we should find in each one’s life sorrow and suffering enough to disarm all hostility.

Dear *[FNAME]*:
No wild animal mother does things for her children that they have learned to do for themselves. Help your children grow up by backing off and letting them master the art of living the way you did: by trial and error.

Acknowledging that the only real working basis is oneself and that there is no way around that, one takes refuge in the Buddha as an example, in the dharma as the path, and in the sangha as companionship.

Skillful Speech

Skillful Speech
Few things can improve the nature of our relationships as much as the development of skillful speech. Silence offers us, and those around us, the spaciousness we need to speak more skillfully. When we speak with greater skill, our true self–our compassionate, loving self–emerges with gentle ease.

– Allan Lokos, ” Skillful Speech “

Nobody to Be, Nothing to Strive For

To study the way of enlightenment is to study the self. To study the self is to forget the self. To forget the self is to be actualized by myriad things.
