Mini Mindfulness Break for July 04, 2019

Abbot Lot came to Abbot Joseph and said: Father, according as I am able, I keep my little rule, and my little fast, my prayer, meditation and contemplative silence; and according as I am able I strive to cleanse my heart of thoughts: now what more should I do? The elder rose up in reply and stretched out his hands to heaven, and his fingers became like ten lamps of fire. He said: Why not be utterly changed into fire?
From Thomas Merton: The Wisdom of the Desert

I’ve never quite lost the perspective that what we call “reality” is a projection of consciousness. Suffering is genuine, significant, and truly horrible. But under it — around it, containing it — is something much more true. It brings light and grace to all the horror. It makes sense of everything.

What to Do in This Life?

What to do–? in this life?
It’ll be gone

Finding the Natural Balance

I dissolve in activity, in relationship with my surroundings, so that the inner world can flow out, and the outer world can arrive within. I have to both put in effort and know when to let go. There’s a natural balance, a dance, between embracing and releasing: turning your surroundings into yourself, like the tree that absorbs carbon dioxide, and turning yourself into your surroundings, like the same tree releasing oxygen.

We really have to understand the person we want to love. If our love is only a will to possess, it is not love. If we only think of ourselves, if we know only our own needs and ignore the needs of the other person, we cannot love.

The Magic of Reflecting

Through the magic of reflecting on the teachings, their force–sometimes clear, sometimes obscure–will cause ferment in our minds from which we can gradually distill the wisdom of reflection. This requires discipline, but also bravery–the bravery to dig deep down to uncover our confusion.

…Grief is not sadness. Grief is love. Grief is a felt experience of love for something lost or that we are losing. That is an incredibly powerful doorway. I think we all carry that abiding ocean of love for the miracle of our world.
