Mini Mindfulness Break for August 28, 2020

As we attempt to understand ourselves and our struggles with life’s endeavors, we may find peace in the observation of a flower. Ask yourself: At what point in a flower’s life, from seed to bloom, has it reached perfection?

Working with Difficult Feelings

A feeling-tone is a feeling-tone, and that’s all. Just like anything else, the invitation is to be with it, not to listen to it, not to ignore it, not to push it away, not to repress it, not to act on it.

The Space We Need

Noticing the space around people and things provides a different way of looking at them, and developing this spacious view is a way of opening oneself. When one has a spacious mind, there is room for everything.

Overshooting the Mark

The problem is that when people practice meditation–especially since we’re all almost all converts–of necessity that involves, at least in the early years, a sort of neurotic investment of energy. It doesn’t accomplish anything. You sort of overshoot the mark…. Sometimes, aiming lower you accomplish more.

Beyond Heartache

In truth, we [parents] never have stood between our kids and heartache–theirs or our own. The good news is that the Buddha showed us a path that leads beyond heartache, beyond samvega [dismay], beyond suffering. Our best wish for our children is that they find it, too.

On the Impermanence of Desire

As a simple experiment, the next time you have some wanting or desire in the mind, investigate what the wanting feels like and then notice how it feels when the wanting passes away. Given the great law of impermanence, it always will.
