The Truth About Gossip
When talking about others is motivated by thoughts of ill will, jealousy, or attachment, conversations turn into gossip. These thoughts may seem to be subconscious, but if we pay close attention to our mind we’ll be able to catch them in the act. Many of these are thoughts that we don’t want to acknowledge to ourselves, let alone to others, but my experience is that when I become courageous enough to notice and admit them, I’m on my way to letting them go. – Thubten Chodron, “The Truth About Gossip” Click here to learn how you can receive a 30 minute Mindfulness Break in your home. |

Sometimes, when I can’t reach the Calm, I’ll just stomp into the Storm with the wild hope that it’s more benevolent than it seems. With a sort of inner Viking war scream, I’ll open the grim and complicated spreadsheets from the bank, or go get the painful medical test, or initiate the conversation I’m way too afraid to have. If there’s nothing else to do, I’ll sit in a silent room, refuse to distract myself, and face the tempest in my mind.

Free To Question
When we ask an open question we have not yet found an answer. And this leaves the mind free, unobstructed, and ready for adventure… There is nothing ignorant or vague about this openness, because questioning actively engages the movement and fluidity of life. – Elizabeth Mattis Namgyel, “The Power of an Open Question” Click here to learn how you can receive a 30 minute Mindfulness Break in your home. |

Clear Thinking
Debating trains you to be clear and gives you an analytical mind. When you study Buddhism you can analyze what really makes sense rather than simply memorizing. And to daily life, you bring skills in analysis and clear thinking. – Rinchen Khando Choegyal, “Standing as Equals” Click here to learn how you can receive a 30 minute Mindfulness Break in your home. |

The Highest Aspiration
It’s one thing to practice to get some relief from anxiety, to calm the mind–all of which is certainly legitimate–but it’s practicing Zen on a very superficial level. From the Zen Buddhist point of view this is a very low aspiration. The highest aspiration is the desire for awakening. – Philip Kapleau Roshi, “Life with a Capital ‘L'” Click here to learn how you can receive a 30 minute Mindfulness Break in your home. |

Bad Meditation? No Such Thing!
The mind can do wonderful and unexpected things. Meditators who are having a difficult time achieving a peaceful state of mind sometimes start thinking, ‘Here we go again, another hour of frustration.’ But often something strange happens; although they are anticipating failure, they reach a very peaceful meditative state. My first meditation teacher told me that there is no such thing as a bad meditation. He was right. During the difficult meditations you build up your strength, which creates meditation for peace. – Ajahn Brahm, “Stepping Towards Enlightenment” Click here to learn how you can receive a 30 minute Mindfulness Break in your home. |

When we bear witness, when we become the situation – homelessness, poverty, illness, violence, death – the right action arises by itself… Peacemaking is the functioning of bearing witness. Once we listen with our entire body and mind, loving action arises.

The Truth about Suffering
I once thought Buddhism would save me from suffering. That was before I started to grow older and wiser. And it isn’t so much the wisdom that changed my mind about the end of suffering as it is the aging. – Wes Nisker, “The Question” Click here to learn how you can receive a 30 minute Mindfulness Break in your home. |

My life is filthy with miracles, and yet droughts last as long as they last. The ice caps melt. Polar bears starve. Right now, that sucks. But maybe it’s more important to be driven into despair, humility, and open mind than to get my way in any given moment.
