Take A Moment
As an experiment, the next time you are doing an errand, stuck in traffic, or standing in line at the supermarket, instead of being preoccupied with where you’re going or what needs to be done, take a moment to simply send loving wishes to all those around you. Often, there is an immediate and very remarkable shift as we feel more connected and more present. – Joseph Goldstein, “Triumph of the Heart” |

To feel is a verb; it is something that happens. We all feel. Emotion is a noun, a thing. To feel is beautiful, belonging to both the animal and human condition. When we allow feelings to harden and coalesce into emotions, which we transport like overburdened slaves, we deny ourselves life’s freshness, it’s ever present potential for renewal and transformation.

“Mindfulness is a quality we can find in every faith tradition and even in non-faith traditions, certainly in secular society, we value the capacity to be attentive and to be in the present moment. So whether you are Christian, Jewish, Muslim, we all can get in touch with the present moment.”

The Exquisite Taste of Plain Water
When we are able to fully appreciate the basic activities of eating and drinking, we discover an ancient secret, the secret of how to become content and at ease. The Zen teachings talk about the exquisite taste of plain water. Have you ever been very, very thirsty? Maybe you were on a long hike, or sick, or working without a break in the summer heat. When you were finally able to drink, even plain water, you remember how wonderful it was. Actually, each sip of liquid and each bite of food can be that fresh and delicious, once we learn again just to be present. – Jan Chozen Bays, “Mindful Eating” |

Mindfulness of the body involves being fully conscious of your bodily sensations as they occur in the present moment. Reflecting upon bodily action, as described here, has to do with being sensitive to the ethical quality of your actions, which requires tuning in not only to what you are doing but also to how your current activities affect yourself and others. If they pass review, then carry on; if not, it is time to alter your behavior.

Elaborating On the “Now”
We know not to get caught in the past or the future, but in order to be in the Now, we also have to let go of the present. The Now is not confined by relative clock time, yet it is also not pure timelessness. – Loch Kelly, “When Am I? “ |

The Circle of Attention
What gets our attention in the present is colored by our impulses and innate disposition–our habits of thought developed in the past. – Sandra Weinberg, “Eating and the Wheel of Life” |

The sun and the moon are reflected in clear, still water instantly.
Similarly, the blessings of all the buddhas are always present for those who have complete confidence in them. The sun’s rays fall everywhere uniformly, but only where they are focused through a magnifying glass can they set dry grass on fire. When the all-pervading rays of the Buddha’s compassion are focused through the magnifying glass of your faith and devotion, the flame of blessings blazes up in your being. – Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche |

Dear One, I have good news and bad news. However you’re feeling right now, this too shall pass. In fact, if you let yourself purely feel the emotion without complicating it with language, whatever you feel will most likely end in about ninety seconds. If you’re sad, it’s fleeting. (Phew!) If you’re blissed out, it won’t last either. (Bummer.) If you’re enraged, it will move through you. (Grrrrr.) If you’re bursting with obsessively romantic fervor, the crush will fade. (Sigh . . .) Find comfort in this, darling. States are fleeting, but it’s possible to have a deeper level of joy that is not dependent on transient states. When you’re not grasping for feelings you like and resisting feelings you don’t like, you’re more likely to find gratitude in the moment for whatever experience of human emotion you’re blessed to feel right now. Don’t like how you feel in this present moment? Don’t worry. I’m here with you every ninety seconds. Nothing lasts but me, Your Inner Pilot Light – Lissa Rankin, MD, Your Inner Pilot Light |
