Mini Mindfulness Break for September 29, 2021

Dear *[FNAME]*:
The Wisdom Within You

Wisdom isn’t something you can “do” or “make happen”–it’s there in all of us. By becoming more familiar with that space within ourselves and trusting our own instincts more fully, we can learn to apply this quality of discriminating wisdom in everyday life.

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Truth Will Set Us Free

Liberation comes not by believing in the right set of tenets or of dogmatic assertions, or even necessarily by behaving in the right way. It’s insight, it’s wisdom, it’s knowing the nature of reality. It is only truth that will make us free.

– Interview with B. Alan Wallace by James Shaheen, “What Is True Happiness?”

The Wisdom of Generosity

The practice of generosity is a wisdom practice, because it’s aligning you with the real truth of things: what you think of as yours, as part of your identity, is only temporary.

Embarking on an Optimistic Path

Buddhism is a path of supreme optimism, for one of its basic tenets is that no human life or experience is to be wasted or forgotten, but all should be transformed into a source of wisdom and compassionate living.

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Learn to hold your perceptions lightly. Perception is a useful tool and can be used by wisdom to disengage us from suffering. But as with any tool, if we mishandle it we can cause harm to ourselves and others. Practice reminding yourself that your perceptions are only creating a map of the world that may or may not depict the terrain accurately. When our stories give rise to craving, they are doing more harm than good.

– Andrew Olendzki, Dharma Wheel – Tricycle

Dear *[FNAME]*:
The Examined Life

Life is profound if you’re awake to see it. It’s one thing to draw from culture, it’s another thing to be drawn so deeply into the culture that your true nature disappears. Wisdom is not merely something to be gained with old age. One can be wise in every stage of one’s life. To manifest wisdom means simply to step back and see–to reflect, inquire, be aware, be disciplined, and be focused not once in a while, but all of the time, moment to moment. This life is precious and fleeting. Pay attention.

– Seido Ray Ronci, “The Examined Life”

Dear *[FNAME]*:
American Buddhism Calls for Participation

In this historical moment when American democratic ideals of freedom, civility, pluralism, altruism, and individualism make America the most comfortable home on earth for the individual pursuit of enlightenment, it is an essential form of Buddhist practice to participate in politics, to vote, to speak out, to encourage those who agree, to reason with those who disagree. It is wisdom. It is meditation. It is compassion. It is ethics.

– Robert A. F. Thurman, ” The Politics of Enlightenment “

unhelpful. It can tell the difference between the various intentions that arise in our own heart and mind, to know how to navigate and steer in life.

Fundamentally, wisdom knows the difference between suffering and its end; stress, what leads to stress, and how stress ends. It’s the beginning, but also the end of the path.

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Where Meditation Begins

What it all comes down to is that even if you practice meditation to become a paragon of love and wisdom, all it can do is put you face-to-face with who you are and with what is, which is where all meditation begins.
