Dear *[FNAME]*:
Who once was inattentive and now is not,
illuminates the world
like the moon set free from a cloud.

Dear *[FNAME]*:
In taking refuge in the Buddha, we take refuge in the possibility that we, like the Buddha, can be freed from greed, liberated from hatred, and awakened from delusion — this is one of the ways enlightenment is described. We do not take refuge in a deity or power higher than ourselves. We find faith and confidence in the idea that enlightenment is possible because the human being Siddhartha Gautama — as the Buddha was called before his enlightenment — was able to exemplify that potential for humanity in his awakening. We take refuge in a potential that is deeply human.

Dear *[FNAME]*:
The Possibility of Transformation

Only because of emptiness can things change and flow. Emptiness is not a vacuum, a black hole, but the possibility of endless transformations. There is no more grasping, or self-created barriers and limitations. The Buddha-nature can shine through and express itself fully.

– Martine Batchelor, “The Ten Oxherding Pictures”

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Reflecting Upon Social Action

One reflects thus: “I shall initiate and sustain bodily acts of kindness towards my companions, both publicly and privately.” One lives with companions in concord, with mutual appreciation, without disputing, blending like milk and water, viewing each other with kindly eyes. One practices thus: “I set aside what I wish to do and do what my companions wish to do.” (MN 31)

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Acknowledging that the only real working basis is oneself and that there is no way around that, one takes refuge in the Buddha as an example, in the dharma as the path, and in the sangha as companionship.

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Buddha’s answer in the Discourse on Happiness, when he was asked:

“Many gods and men are eager to know what are the greatest blessings which bring about a peaceful and happy life. Please, Tathagata, will you teach us?”

And the Buddha replied with 13 blessings, one of which was:

“To persevere and be open to change, and to have regular contact with monks and nuns, and to fully participate in Dharma discussions – this is the greatest happiness.”

– Buddha
