Mini Mindfulness Break for October 02, 2022

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Lifting the Veil

Awareness can shape the way we relate to our concepts, allowing us to see them for what they are. With study and practice, we can move beyond our reductive thinking, lifting the veil to reveal the true nature of reality.

– Wendy Hasenkamp, “Brain Karma”

Dear *[FNAME]*:
“I will tell you a story my father told me when I was young. There are birds of many colors, red, blue, green and yellow yet it is all one bird. There are horses of many colors, black, brown yellow and white yet it is all one horse. So with cattle. So with men. In this land where one was only Indian is now men of every color. All this came to pass in the heart of the mystery.”

– Te Ata, Bearer of the Morning – Chickasaw Indian, Netflix Movie: Te Ata

Dear *[FNAME]*:
You are consciousness dressed in form, my love. Consciousness is divine. Matter is divine. Creation is divine. Everything is divine. Are you somehow the only exception?

Dear *[FNAME]*:
“I Am Not I”

I am not I.
I am this one
walking beside me whom I do not see, whom at times I manage to visit,
and whom at other times I forget;
who remains calm and silent while I talk,
and forgives, gently, when I hate,
who walks where I am not,
who will remain standing when I die

– By Juan Ramon Jimenez, Dzogchen Center, Translated By Robert Bly

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Always we seek the presence that includes. How can excitement be joyful, energizing, and serve Life? We can see the tendency to veer off–yes, following ego–from “pure” to “impure.” By that I mean simply from “Life” to “ego.” It’s so tricky because it’s all the same, isn’t it? Excitement is excitement feels like excitement and wants to act–wait a minute–there we have it. It’s when we get to “act” that we really want to be heads up. When we slide into “doing,” we want to be paying close, close attention. That’s the point at which we’re usually bamboozled into doing something we would rather we hadn’t done!

I do not personally know of anyone more worthy of [the prize] than this gentle monk from Vietnam. His ideas for peace, if applied, would build a monument to ecumenism, to world brotherhood, to humanity.

– Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Plant Yourself in Your Surroundings

Taking refuge is not some kind of evasion or escape, but is the planting of our “selves” deeply in the nature of what surrounds us. We lodge ourselves in the deep waves and in the shallow pools, in the crests and depressions of our lives. Sometimes, even wreckage can make a temporary resting place.

– Gary Thorp, “Shelter from the Storm”

Dear *[FNAME]*:
The Mind’s Shimmering Reflection

Mind is thus neither the source of light, like a shining sun, nor the reflected light of something greater, like the moon, but a shimmering pool of contingent potential, capable of reflecting sun, moon, and any other object that happens to dance upon its surface.

– Andrew Olendzki, “Mind Like A Mirror”

Dear *[FNAME]*:
The sun and the moon are reflected in clear, still water instantly.

Similarly, the blessings of all the buddhas are always present

for those who have complete confidence in them.

The sun’s rays fall everywhere uniformly,

but only where they are focused through a magnifying glass can they set dry grass on fire.

When the all-pervading rays of the Buddha’s compassion are focused through the magnifying glass

of your faith and devotion, the flame of blessings blazes up in your being.

– Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche
