Mini Mindfulness Break for October 16, 2021

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Practice regarding the physical sensations that constantly flow from your body to your mind with detached curiosity. Some feel good, some feel bad—interesting! Resist trying to shape the next moment into something other than what it will naturally become by grasping for more gratification or pushing away any discomfort. This ability to be with what is, rather than yearning for something else, eliminates most suffering.

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Giving Without Regret

Buddhism praises the value of generosity but warns that you shouldn’t give something away if you’re likely to be upset later and regret giving it away. Similarly, although it’s good to help others, we shouldn’t agree to do something for another person if it will likely lead us to feel exhausted, resentful, and angry at the other person. Each of us has to judge our own capacities and set our boundaries accordingly.

– Lorne Ladner, “Taking a Stand”

Dear *[FNAME]*:
In taking refuge in the Buddha, we take refuge in the possibility that we, like the Buddha, can be freed from greed, liberated from hatred, and awakened from delusion — this is one of the ways enlightenment is described. We do not take refuge in a deity or power higher than ourselves. We find faith and confidence in the idea that enlightenment is possible because the human being Siddhartha Gautama — as the Buddha was called before his enlightenment — was able to exemplify that potential for humanity in his awakening. We take refuge in a potential that is deeply human.

Dear *[FNAME]*:
The Possibility of Transformation

Only because of emptiness can things change and flow. Emptiness is not a vacuum, a black hole, but the possibility of endless transformations. There is no more grasping, or self-created barriers and limitations. The Buddha-nature can shine through and express itself fully.

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Resisting what we can’t control removes us from reality, rendering our emotions, circumstances and loved ones inaccessible. The result is a terrible emptiness, which we usually blame on our failure to get what we want. Actually, it comes from refusing to accept what we have.

Reflecting Enlightenment

To wake up, to be liberated, is to be able to reflect the buddhadharma, as it is, without your projection. You don’t possess enlightenment. It possesses you.
