No one can construct for you the bridge upon which precisely you must cross the stream of life, no one but you yourself alone.

Taking Control of Habit

Each step may seem to take forever, but no matter how uninspired you feel, continue to follow your practice schedule precisely and consistently. This is how we can use our greatest enemy, habit, against itself.

On the occasion of the autumnal equinox I want to share with you a favorite poem about the equal balance of day and night.
It’s entitled, ‘Day & Night’ and was written by the Norwegian poet, Rolf Jacobson:
Endless our day —
It is without end.
It only goes away to another place,
moves silently away for a little while,
throws the blue coat around its shoulders,
rinses it feet in the ocean and goes away
then comes running back again with rosy cheeks
and with cool, good hands
lifts your chin and looks you in the face
and says: “Are you awake yet?”
Endless our night-
it is without end.
it only goes away to another place
a little while,
then it’s here again
with its feverish eyes
and hair dripping wet with sweat
and says: “Why aren’t you sleeping?”
There is no end to the joy, nor to the pain,
Nor to death, nor to life.
They only go away for a little while, they circle
the earth ,
to another heart,
a little while,
then they’re back again with their halting voices:
“Are you sleeping? Are you awake?”
There is no end to the stars and the wind.

– Translated from the Norwegian by Robert Bly

Here’s the thing: we can’t save ourselves from fear by seeking safety, because safety always means there’s something to be safe from–in other words, something to fear. The way out of fear isn’t safety. It’s freedom.

Beyond the Self

Buddhism asks us to go beyond the self, not to perfect the self.

What to Give Up

We need to give up something. We can’t have it all. We can’t try to layer wisdom on top of confusion. The spiritual path is about what we give up, not what we get.

Father Eli

It is important to note that after World War II, Father Eli spent thirteen years in Japan under the guidance of the great Zen teacher, Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki within the 1200 year old Zen temple at Kyoto Kamakura. After four years of study, he was honored as one of the first Americans to be granted the title of Zen Master. What he taught in the retreat was and Americanized version of his Zen training which he combined with his Native American and Scottish traditions.

Last year, I finally made the connection between the Zen Teachings of Father Eli and Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. I began reading my notes from 1973 and 1974, all carefully preserved in two three-inch binders. As I read my notes, it began to dawn on me that the two masters were teaching the same basic ideas on life, liberation and happiness.

Sleep

Sleep is so important for our health and well-being. There is almost nothing more important than a good night’s sleep. However, if you are like me, you never seem to get enough sleep.

As you will see, stress comes in two varieties: harmful stress which is called distress or strain (too much stress,) and beneficial stress which is called eustress. Father Eli would classify distress or strain as a tense emotion. When you feel stress, you tense up and are often overwhelmed. Stress makes your body tense up and sends chemical to your muscles in preparation for an attack by a saber tooth tiger. There are no tigers to threaten us these days, but we are no better off when we are stressed than primitive man was when a tiger was in the vicinity.
