Mini Mindfulness Break for July 16, 2021

Dear *[FNAME]*:
We’re not attempting to meet some standard egocentric karmic conditioning/self-hate sets for us and badgers us to meet. We’re learning, growing, and changing in a process of coming to Presence.

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Karma and Individual Responsibility

By believing that we can actually change our karmic circumstances, we can pray for others, purify negativity, and create positive karma with the intention of attaining enlightenment. Instead of trying to change our outer circumstances, we will understand that it is more meaningful to change our own phenomena.

– Thinley Rinpoche, “Continuous Mind “

Dear *[FNAME]*:
A world small enough for egocentric karmic conditioning/self-hate to control is not nearly large enough for a human being who is awake. As we wake up we become more curious, open, adventuresome, eager to see everything that’s possible for us. We don’t care about knowing. What’s known is dead. Known is the world of karmic conditioning. We want thisherenow, a moment that is brand new, fleeting, and thrilling.

Dear *[FNAME]*:
You don’t beat yourself up. Egocentric karmic conditioning/self-hate does that. The proof of that? If you were doing it, you’d stop. But you can’t stop. You can’t stop because you’re not doing it.

Dear *[FNAME]*:
How to Surrender

In the Shin Buddhist tradition, as we listen to the teaching we are made to realize that we can never surrender ourselves. Resistance comes from the deepest center of our karmic selves. That’s why the Buddha Amida’s compassion says, “Tai, you don’t have to surrender.” When I hear that, when I understand that I can’t do it because it’s not my nature–that it’s like saying, “Fly to the sky”–then I realize that I don’t have to surrender, yet, naturally and spontaneously, the surrender takes place by virtue of true compassion.

Dear *[FNAME]*:
We just keep choosing to practice awareness and expanded awareness is our reward. The more we see and realize, the more expansive our lives are. We learn “how we cause ourselves to suffer” (being in relationship with egocentric karmic conditioning/self-hate), and we learn to disidentify from that relationship and come back to the peace, joy, and clarity of thisherenow.

Mini Mindfulness Break for December 24, 2019

Nothing is going to change until you learn to direct attention away from the voices of egocentric karmic conditioning/self-hate and direct attention to thisherenow. Turn the attention to where you want it and keep it there. That’s the number one priority. If you were a major league baseball pitcher you would need to be able to focus on pitching the baseball. Everything else would come in a distant second.

When we choose to empty the teacup of “I, me, and mine,” when we drop the karmic story, when we redirect the attention from the conversation in conditioned mind to thisherenow, what is is the blessed knowledge of emptiness!

Mini Mindfulness Break for May 26, 2019

Grief is overwhelming only when it’s left in the “hands” of egocentric karmic conditioning/self-hate. It’s no different from any other life experience. If we approach it from center, it brings richness to our lives. If we turn it over to ego, as with anything turned over to ego, it becomes a source of suffering.

Mini Mindfulness Break for January 20, 2019

Egocentric karmic conditioning/self-hate specializes in the “that’s beautiful/that’s ugly,” “that’s malevolent/that’s healing.” The dualistic world of the illusion of a self separate from Life is constantly comparing/judging. But we know that dualistic process is an illusion. There’s no such thing as this or that; there’s only and always this AND that. One whole.
